TWIP – Are the Beatles Coming?, Rumored Feature in the Rumored Monster Bash Remake, Dwight Sullivan Interview, More

— This Week’s Top 5 Stories —

1. Are The Beatles Coming in January?

The Head2Head Pinball Podcast marked their 50th episode with an epic interview with Joe Kaminkow from KaPow Pinball.  It was a wide ranging interview that covered how Joe got into pinball, licensing in the 80s, the pinball wars of the past, and a ton more.  Listen to the full interview here!!  Joe also talked quite a bit about the new KaPow Pinball title in the following exchanges:

Joe K: “…I’d been working on a license for about 10 years.  One of those things, every year for 10 years I called and said “let’s do this” and every year they said “no”.  And about a year and a half ago I called and said “Let’s do this” and they said “Ok, lets do this”.  So Gary and I and Dave have a product, another KaPow product.  There is one product that is coming out that my name won’t be on but I helped them get the license and kind of envisioned the original concept.  It’ll be one of their cornerstone games, you’ll see that probably in November.  And then after the first of the year, probably at the CES show, we’re going to introduce a game that took me over a decade to get the license.  And it is going to be a very very exciting game.  I can’t say much more about it.  It is going to be very limited in the quantity we’re going to build, and we’re never going to build it again.”

H2H: “George Gomez, the question was asked at Texas Pinball Festival, if Stern and KaPow would revisit the Super LE product range, and he said ‘Yep, and you’ll probably see it pretty soon with the next KaPow title.’  Is that what we’re talking about here?”

Joe K: “Yeah, probably.  And it is not going to be super duper expensive.  They’ll be a couple limited versions of it.  Guys, this game is the perfect pinball.  And it is the one game that every pinball collector, player, has always dreamt would one day be made.  I didn’t think it would every really happen.  And it was literally a decade of tenacity to get the brand.”

H2H: “So are you trying to get that brand for pinball or for slot machines and pinball?”

Joe K: “Pinball.  For slot machines, we offered I think $50 million dollars for it and we got turned down.  I will tell you it is probably the first million dollar plus license ever for pinball, in pinball’s history.”

H2H: “Is it a license that has been around for a while?  Or something that has been around for 10 years and you’ve been fighting for 10 years?”

Joe K: “No, it’s been around for a long time.”

H2H: “What do you think makes a good license these days?  You obviously have a lot of licenses you now deal with, what makes you think – you know what, that would make a great pinball?”

Joe K: “I think it is the collectability of it.  I think the affinity people have for the brand.  The emotional attachment that people have for it.  Do you guys ever see that guy James Corden, he has that talk show?  And last week there was a video he did – he does that carpool karaoke.  Did you see him with Paul McCartney?  I mean, it was one of the best things I’ve seen on TV in years.  Do you know how many views it’s had in a week?  100 million.  100 million views.  You go, that is pretty powerful, that is what you want to look for, something that powerful.”

Joe K: “…when you see what we’re coming out with in January, it is going to blow your mind.  You’ll just want to have one because it is so much fun.  You’ll go, oh my god I’ve waited my whole life for this, and it finally happened.”

H2H: “What about something like – people are always screaming for a Harry Potter pinball machine.  And I’m guessing slot machines would be popular as well.  I guess the story there, I’m sure you’ve tried, is that she doesn’t want anything to do with gaming, slot machines or pinball machines?”

Joe K: “We’ll see in time.  There’s a social game out right now with Harry Potter.  You’ve got the Broadway show…will there be a Harry Potter game?  Maybe one day.  It might be a KaPow game one day, we’ll see…Never say never.”

H2H: “There is a Goonies slot machine, I don’t think it is made by Aristocrat, made by someone else.  Do you see that as a good license for pinball machines?”

Joe K: “There are better things.  There are better things coming.  Maybe one day if you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel.  Not to say the Three Stooges or Animal House wouldn’t have it’s collectable, but there isn’t enough heat around it, theres not enough affinity to it.  There is just better stuff out there.  You’ll see in January.  There’s better stuff.”

H2H: “Will people need to possibly apply for this vs. just ringing up their distributor?”

Joe K: “No I don’t think so.  I don’t think so.  That was something we tried and it was interesting and created some hype and some demand.  This game is just going to be limited.  We’re going to make X number of them.  That is all we will ever make of them.  It is one of those games that when they’re gone and they’re gone – they’ll be thousands if not tens of thousands of games in demand for the brand.  So if you buy one and put it away and buy one to enjoy, probably two years from now it’ll be something you can sell for more.  There just simply not be enough games to meet the demand.  And that is designed that way.  We want to leave the market hungry so people that get them and put them away will know it will always have value.  And the games you want in your home or in your collection, its the first game any friend you have that will come to your house, it will be the first game they walk to to play.”

H2H: “Will Lyman Sheats be working on this game?”

Joe K: “He’s not on this project, he’s still working on Batman…we’ve got a different team that has worked on this project.  This is a different type of product.  It is very classic pinball.  And I think you guys are going to really appreciate this game a lot.  I mean if you like playing pinball, you’re going to like this game a lot.”

H2H: “While you were chatting I was listening, but I also just emailed the Australian distributor to be put on the list for the next KaPow game, just in case.  You’re hyping it up so much…”

Joe K: “You won’t be disappointed.  You’ll be really proud of this game when you have it in your collection.  I’ve been playing it, I’ve been playing the whitewood.  I was in Chicago Thursday playing it.  It does something really special that I can’t discuss right now.  But…just wait until you see it.  I can’t say enough about it.  It is a game you’ve always wanted.  And I honestly never thought I’d get the license.”

That is a load of information.  He doesn’t say that the license is the Beatles.  But he seems to give some strong hints in that direction.  So let’s work through this.

  • Back in January 2018, This Week in Pinball confirmed that The Beatles license had been acquired by a pinball company/manufacturer.

  • In March at the Texas Pinball Festival, Barry Oursler gave an interview saying that Stern had the Beatles license.

  • The current rumors we have for upcoming big Stern licensed titles include Deadpool, The Munsters, The Beatles, Superman, and Beetlejuice.

  • Joe mentioned he was turned down for a slot machine for this license.  The Munsters, Beetlejuice, and Superman have slot machines.

  • Deadpool is rumored to be the next Stern license released, which doesn’t seem to fit the January schedule.

  • Joe talks up the license – it is expensive, many have wanted it…

  • And then there is this exchange:

So draw your own conclusions!  Exciting times ahead.

2. Chicago Gaming Company Game #3 Rumored Feature

Recently on the This Week in Pinball Podcast, Zach Meny and myself were discussing thoughts on what may be causing the delay of the release of Chicago Gaming Company’s Game #3, which is heavily rumored to be Monster Bash Remake.  Zach mentioned the following regarding the delay:

“There is another part that they haven’t talked about yet that once announced, you’ll know why there is a little bit of a delay.  And it is unbelievable…”

Then this last week, after the Joe Kaminkow interview on the Head2Head Pinball Podcast, Ryan C and Marty had the following exchange:

Ryan: “Monster Bash Remake.  I heard on This Week in Pinball Podcast – Zach was teasing that he was the only one that knew this super cool feature that Monster Bash has.  And I was like “What’s it gonna be?” and I found out.  And I’m actually excited about the game now.”

Martin: “Really? What could they possibly do that would make that amazing, beyond what it is?”

Ryan: “If this is true, I think this is such a cool addition to the pinball machine that I’d rather people be surprised by it.  All I’ll say, and maybe you’ll figure it out by this, and I’m not going to say yes or no.  What is the number one complaint about Monster Bash?  And that’s it.”

Martin: “I don’t know there really is a lot of complaints…probably the only one I know is that people say the rules are a bit shallow.”

Ryan: “Well.  Yeah.  [laughs]  I’m not going to say yes or give you a reaction!”

Are they hinting that the delays have to do with additions that may be added to make the rules and code a bit deeper?  Also, can we please see this machine soon??

3. The New Special When Lit Podcast Interviews Dwight Sullivan

A new pinball podcast was announced last week!  It is called the Special When Lit Pinball Podcast and is hosted by Ken Cromwell and Bill Webb.  And they got off to a hot start by dropping three episodes, one that includes an interview with Stern Game Developer, Dwight Sullivan.  They had several interesting exchanges – listen to the full interview here!  Here are a few tidbits:

Dwight [on Ghostbusters]: “I’m proud of it. I think it was pretty good. John and I – early on, we decided to make kind of a mean game. And I think it came out a little too mean. I wanted those drop targets to be in your face, I wanted you to be a Ghostbuster who was constantly battling the game, you were catching ghosts. And we pulled that off, but I think the game came out a little mean.”

Special When Lit: “What would you have changed?”

Dwight: “I don’t like the John Trudeau bottom.”

SWL: “The flipper gap?”

Dwight: “The flipper gap and the flop flippers.”

SWL: “Can you explain what that is for someone that doesn’t understand what that means?”

Dwight: “Flop flippers are flippers that hang down – they’re not parallel to the return lane line that comes down. So the return lanes bring the ball down a path, and then flop flippers don’t continue that line, they flop down a little bit. And the reason John does that is smart…it is easier to hit shots that are on the far left and the far right. Making it less easy to hit shots up the middle, but it is a compromise.”

SWL: “Now we’re into Star Wars…I think it is important we talk about this pin because it was so important to you, so important to so many people, it is such an iconic theme. A dream theme for I would say a good percent of people that not only collect pinball, but are just casual pinball players.”

Dwight: “You’re absolutely right. And that made it that much more difficult to design for. Because no matter what you did, no matter which way you went – design with toys or shots or rules, or if the game was simple or more complex, no matter which way you went with it, there were always going to be people that knew it should be something different. That in their mind, Star Wars means “this”. And you can’t hit everybody’s “this”. So I always have to go with my gut, and say “what do I want out of the game?”. And I want it to be epic. And I tried to make it epic.”

(NOTE: The next question/answer is a little out of context because Dwight had just finished talking about how proud he is of Star Wars.)

SWL: “So what is next for you, Dwight?  What are we looking forward to?”

Dwight: “I am challenging myself not to make a game like Star Wars. I love Star Wars. Over the last couple weeks I’ve been finishing Star Wars. I had some things I didn’t like about it, and now they’re gone. And now when I play Star Wars  I really really like it. Star Trek Next Generation, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars are my top three games, and today Star Wars is the top game for me. But it is extremely complex, it is not approachable, it lacks in those areas. I think T2 was much more approachable and fun, but T2 today wouldn’t last, because half the games go to basements and T2 is a very simple game. So I’m going to try to make a game that is more like T2.”

SWL: “Are you working on something currently?”

Dwight: “I am. So I just wrapped up Star Wars, but along the way for the last couple of months or more I’ve been working closely with a designer on our next pin.”

SWL: “And that is currently in the works?”

Dwight: “Right. For a while now.”

With these guys being located near Chicago, this is definitely a podcast to keep an eye on.  Go check out and like their Facebook page here!

5. Path of Play and ReplayFX Announce Partnership

Path of Play and ReplayFX have announced a partnership – read the full announcement here!  It reads in part:

“It is with great pleasure that the Replay Foundation and Path of Play, officially announce a partnership.  This, to expand on their charitable initiatives, and produce results with greater impact by way of their respective mandates and assets.

The Replay Foundation promotes the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of gaming technology, with an emphasis on the player experience.

Path of Play is a Canadian based humanitarian project that serves families living with autism, through a variety of subsidy and gaming programs.  Although the plan to grow globally is long-term, it deserves recognition that in less than one year, they have raised just over $20,000 in Canadian funds.

Tremendous friendships have flourished this past year between these two entities. As a result, an opportunity has come about where the functions of each organisation can be used to compliment the other.  This partnership, will benefit both charities greatly, and will also serve as a cornerstone for those who enjoy the entertainment value offered by both of these charities.”

It goes on to outline details of the arrangement from both sides.  Commitments from The Replay Foundation include:

  • Pinball Feeder Program

  • Endorsement Partner for Fund Raising and Awareness

Responsibilities of Path of Play include:

  • Production of Introductory Pinball Tutorial Content

  • Evolve the PAPA TV Streaming Infrastructure

  • Creation of New PAPA TV Content

  • Tightening the Relationship Between the Pinball and Board Game Hobbies

To look a little deeper into just one of the exciting elements of this agreement, the Production of Introductory Pinball Tutorial Content is described like this:

“The intent of this initiative is to use the machines loaned to Path of Play, as a starting point for rudimentary based pinball instruction.  Although there are numerous high-quality streams and videos already available for the intermediate to advanced pinball player, a gap exists when it comes to the true novice.  Path of Play will fill this gap through a collection of series based tutorial segments, designed to not overwhelm the new player.  We believe this is catalyst for growing the hobby.”

TWIP got a sneak peek at one of these videos, and they are VERY well done and will be a great asset to this hobby!!

This sounds like a great partnership that will be a big benefit to the pinball hobby!
